Each spring for the past 39 years, alumni in the wine industry have gathered on campus to help select the wines to offer for the Stanford Wine Collection.
The tasting panel samples wines from dozens of West Coast wineries. The wines are arranged in flights—the bottles are wrapped and the panelists do not know the producers or the vintages of the wines.
The judges rank the wines and assign points based on the Davis 20-point scale. After nearly two hours of sipping and swirling in library-like conditions, the judges submit their tasting cards. The results are tabulated and the wines are selected. Each year we design a commemorative Stanford label series for our wines. The campus images featured on the 2019 collection were painted by American artist Stan Fellows.
